HighlightSeven days exploring Costa Rica's rainforests, cloud forests, and volcanic landscapes with expert guides
Canopy sky walk through jungle suspension bridges at Arenal. Wildlife spotting including monkeys, sloths, and toucans in cloud forest. River float down Peñas Blancas River searching for tropical fauna

You begin in Tortuguero, watching for wildlife in the rainforest. You may hear birds and insects calling through the rainforest as you cross the canopy on a sky walk, feel heat rising from bubbling mud pools and look for signs of nesting turtles along the shore. From San José to Monteverde, you’ll stand near an active volcano, see the bright brushwork on Sarchí’s hand-painted oxcarts and float along the Peñas Blancas River, watching the trees for monkeys and sloths.

Day by day

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Arrive San José

Ahh, Costa Rica. Let the Pura Vida way of life take over as you arrive in San Jose. Trendy Barrio Amon offers a glimpse into the history of the city with colonial mansions converted into art galleries, while Barrio Escalante is a foodie’s paradise and the best place to grab dinner to begin your Costa Rica value tour.

  2. 2

    San José – Monteverde

Tick off San José’s iconic sights with a quick sightseeing tour before travelling towards the creative little town of Sarchí. Seen as the cradle of Costa Rican artisanship, this is the place to buy intricate arts, crafts and souvenirs including the hand-painted and bright coloured oxcart, the national symbol of Costa Rica. The journey continues through the Tilaran Mountain range listening for the collective “oohs” and “aahs” as you enter the mysterious and misty Cloud Forest.

  3. 3

    Monteverde Sightseeing and Free Time

Step into another world on your Costa Rica value tour in a cloud forest reserve. Learn about the thousands of plant and animal species that thrive in this area, many of which only exist right here, from your Travel Director. Keep your ears open for the sounds of hummingbirds, howler monkeys, sloths, toucans, and if you’re really lucky, the Resplendent Quetzal. Leaving the forest on a nature high, you’ll have time to relax this afternoon, or choose from a selection of Optional Experiences.

  4. 4

    Monteverde – Arenal

La Fortuna, home to bubbling hot springs, geothermal marvels, and the imposing Arenal Volcano, is one of the true jewels in Costa Rica’s crown. The surrounding landscape teems with tropical flora and fauna, offering opportunities to spot colorful birds, playful monkeys, and even tame iguanas roaming the grounds. After a day of adventure, guests can relax and recharge in a soothing outdoor pool nestled in the heart of this lush paradise.

  5. 5

    Arenal full day sightseeing

Reach new heights at Arenal Hanging Bridges Park, joining a Local Specialist for a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience on a ‘sky walk’ through the jungle canopy. Keep your eyes peeled for colourful birdlife as you cross the suspension bridges. Later, take your pick of Optional Experiences — zip through the rainforest on an adrenaline-pumping canopy tour at Ecoglide Park, or explore La Fortuna’s trails with a Local Specialist before making your own tortilla. End the day soaking in blissful hot springs, or choose to unwind in natural thermal pools followed by a relaxed rainforest dinner.

  6. 6

    Arenal Sightseeing and Free Time

If a tranquil river float and wildlife search sounds like you, you won’t want to miss this morning’s safari float down the Peñas Blancas River. Paired up with a Local Specialist, you’ll love spotting monkeys, sloths, iguanas, caimans and tropical birds.

  7. 7

    Arenal – Depart San José

Your Costa Rica value tour comes to an end this morning. Transfer back to San José International Airport, arriving at approximately 11:00 AM.

Travel at 60 Social Getaways

Travel further when you're not travelling alone

Our Social Getaways are small-group holidays designed especially for over-60s Australians who want the freedom of a great trip without the work of planning every detail. A Travel at 60 host travels with the group, the operator handles the logistics, and you get to focus on the bit that matters — the people, the places, and the stories you'll bring home.

Open to solo travellers too. Many of our travellers book on their own and find their feet quickly in a friendly group of like-minded Australians. Reduced single-supplement options are available on most departures — ask one of our consultants and we'll talk you through what's offered on this trip.

  • A friendly Travel at 60 host — an Australian face on the ground, looking out for the group from day one.
  • Curated local guides & boutique suppliers — the same operators we'd book for our own families.
  • Real itineraries, not whirlwind tours — comfortable transfers, breathing room, and the “off the beaten track” stops the big bus tours skip.

Want to talk it through? Call 1300 414 198 7 days a week, Queensland time, and one of our consultants will walk you through it.
