HighlightExplore Austria and Bavaria's Christmas markets, palaces and Alpine scenery on an eight-day winter journey
Vienna's Schonbrunn Palace with gilded Rococo rooms and mirrors. Salzburg's 500-year-old Christmas Market with gingerbread and mulled wine. Horse-drawn carriage ride through Tyrolean Alpine countryside in Seefeld

White sheets of snow lie softly across the Austrian Alps as you travel between palace rooms, market squares and mountain towns wrapped in winter colour. At Vienna's Schonbrunn Palace, you move through white-and-gold Rococo rooms, where mirrors and ceiling frescoes catch the palace light. You follow the scent of gingerbread through Salzburg's 500-year-old Christmas Market, while Munich's six-storey tree rises above the glow of wooden stalls. In snow-dusted Seefeld, you’ll climb aboard a horse-drawn carriage for a ride through the Tyrolean countryside, listening to the gentle clop of hooves as alpine scenery unfolds around you. In Innsbruck, you warm your hands around Gluhwein as Swarovski crystal glints from the market stalls and chatter fills the cool air. The Salzburg Market Tasting experience brings you closer to the people behind the stalls, as you meet a market stallholder over mulled wine and a piece of traditional Lebkuchen. At Neuschwanstein, you follow the castle's ornate rooms and story-book details, tracing the world said to have inspired Walt Disney.

    Vienna sightseeing

At this time of year, Vienna is a place of nostalgia and romance, alive with concerts, nativity displays and official Advent Markets brimming with seasonal gifts and warming treats. Tour Schönbrunn Palace with your Local Specialist, exploring its gilded halls and lavish private apartments. Later, enjoy a panoramic drive around the grand Ringstrasse, built along the line of the former city walls, showcasing the Opera House, Hofburg Imperial Residence and City Hall. The surrounding parklands glow with festive lights, setting the scene for a visit to the Viennese Christmas Market. You may choose to join an Optional Experience to St. Stephen’s Cathedral, where you'll enjoy a warming cup of Glühwein at the Christmas market in the shadow of Vienna’s most iconic landmark.

  3. 3

    To Enchanting Salzburg

Journey through the rich farmlands of eastern Austria towards the lakes and mountains of the Salzkammergut and the enchanting city of Salzburg. Visit Mozart's birthplace to learn more about his life, and sit down to a musical demonstration on his original pianoforte.

  4. 4

    The City of Mozart

Come December, the spires and domes of Salzburg’s old town are often draped in snow. Walk with your Local Specialist to see Mozart’s family home on the Getreidegasse, beautifully decorated at this time of year. Then head on to the rosy hues of the 500-year-old Christmas Market in front of the cathedral. Culinary delicacies, candied fruits, hot mulled wine and the lovingly decorated stalls invite visitors to stop and browse. Here your Travel Director will introduce you to a market stallholder to enjoy sampling a Viennese winter dessert, complemented perfectly with a traditional fragrant glass of Glühwein.

  5. 5

    A Scenic Drive to Innsbruck

A lovely drive brings you to the Inn Valley and the Tyrolean Alps. Travel at 60 Social Getaways

Travel further when you're not travelling alone

Our Social Getaways are small-group holidays designed especially for over-60s Australians who want the freedom of a great trip without the work of planning every detail. A Travel at 60 host travels with the group, the operator handles the logistics, and you get to focus on the bit that matters — the people, the places, and the stories you'll bring home.

Open to solo travellers too. Many of our travellers book on their own and find their feet quickly in a friendly group of like-minded Australians. Reduced single-supplement options are available on most departures — ask one of our consultants and we'll talk you through what's offered on this trip.

  • A friendly Travel at 60 host — an Australian face on the ground, looking out for the group from day one.
  • Curated local guides & boutique suppliers — the same operators we'd book for our own families.
  • Real itineraries, not whirlwind tours — comfortable transfers, breathing room, and the “off the beaten track” stops the big bus tours skip.

Want to talk it through? Call 1300 414 198 7 days a week, Queensland time, and one of our consultants will walk you through it.
